Read More (About Mooney)Mooney International Corporation was founded by Albert and Arthur Mooney in 1929 as the Mooney Aviation Company. The company went bankrupt shortly after, but Mooney went on to start Mooney Aircraft Incorporated in the late 1940s and moved its headquarters to Kerrville, Texas, in 1953. The facility produced the Mooney Mite and the Mooney M20, which broke speed records as it surpassed 200 mph (322 km/h).
Mooney, which has delivered more than 11,000 general-aviation aircraft globally, is known for its high-performance, handcrafted airplanes with a “backward” vertical tailfin. The company produced the first pressurized single-engine, piston-powered aircraft, the M22 Mustang, in 1965, then went on to record the fastest transcontinental flight in a single-engine, piston-powered production aircraft with the M20K 231 in 1980. In 2006, Mooney designed and built the M20TN Acclaim Type S, the fastest certified piston single aircraft.
After various sales and mergers and suspended aircraft production for several years in the 2000s, Mooney returned to production after the Meijeng Group of China acquired the company in 2013. Mooney produced various aircraft in the ensuing years, including the flagship four-seat M20V Acclaim Ultra, a high-performance, twin-turbocharged, single-engine aircraft, and the M20U Ovation Ultra, a normally aspirated, single-engine aircraft that uses Garmin G1000 NXi avionics and a Continental IO-500-G engine.
A new Mooney facility in Chino, California, attempted to develop diesel-powered two-seater planes until its closure in 2017. Production ceased at the Kerrville plant in late 2019, but as of this writing Mooney continues to support its existing customers under the auspices of Meijeng Group and Wyoming-based ownership group US Financial, LLC. Investors and executives in the company include Mooney pilots and owners.
Mooney says it serves more than 7,000 customers in the United States and more than 1,000 around the globe. The aircraft the company has created has flown more than 40 million flight hours. Pre-owned Mooney aircraft include Acclaim, Ovation, and Bravo variants and versions of the M20.
