Cessna also manufactures Denali, SkyCourier, and Caravan-branded turboprops and piston-powered models that include the Skyhawk, Skylane, and Turbo Stationair HD.


    Cessna 182 Skylane

    Company History

    Although Cessna Aircraft Company was formally founded in 1927—and was subsequently forced to shutter operations soon after due to the Great Depression—its roots trace back to 1911 when Kansas farmer Clyde Cessna built and flew his own aircraft. In 1934, Cessna’s nephews Dwane and Dwight Wallace helped reorganize and reopen the company. After Clyde Cessna retired in 1936, Dwane became company president. He would lead Cessna through a period of great prosperity during which it released its first business jet, the Citation I, in the late 1960s, and became one of the world’s biggest business jet manufacturers.

    In 1985, General Dynamics acquired Cessna, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Textron acquired the Cessna brand from General Dynamics in 1992. In 2014, Textron Aviation was formed after Textron acquired Beech Holdings. That acquisition brought the Cessna, Beechcraft, and Hawker aircraft brands under one roof.

    Cessna Citation Aircraft

    Citation jets include the CJ3+, CJ4 Gen2, Latitude, Longitude, M2, and XLS+ models. In September 2019, Cessna celebrated 50 years since the Citation’s first flight. Cessna has delivered more than 5,000 light jets and over 7,500 Citations total worldwide since then, with a global fleet that today has amassed 35 million-plus flight hours.

    In 2020, Cessna delivered its 250th Citation M2 and marked the fifth anniversary of the midsize Citation Latitude’s entry into service. In 2021, the company celebrated 600 deliveries of Citation CJ3 series aircraft with the shipment of a Citation CJ3+, billed as the “ultimate utility player.” Cessna also shipped the first Citation CJ4 Gen2 to a European customer in 2021. Introduced in February 2021, the CJ4 Gen2 updated the CJ4, and is Cessna’s largest Citation light jet.

    Cessna Turboprops & Pistons

    Cessna introduced its piston-powered SkyCourier in 2017 complete with a clean-sheet design and available in both 19-passenger and freighter configurations. The utility turboprop was to begin deliveries by 2021’s end. In 2020, Cessna marked the 65th anniversary of the maiden flight of its Skyhawk model. Long popular with flight schools and academies, Cessna says the Skyhawk is the most popular single-engine piston in aviation history, pointing to 45,000 deliveries as evidence. In 2021, Cessna celebrated 65 years of service for its single-engine, four-seat Skylane 182. Cessna has entered more than 23,000 Skylanes into service worldwide.
