Bankstown Airport Takes Off—Investing In The Future Of Aviation

Since World War II, Bankstown Airport in Southwest Sydney has delivered essential services to communities across metropolitan and regional areas. Such operations continue at New South Wales’ No. 1 general aviation (GA) airport today, from flight training and emergency and aeromedical services to emerging net-zero technologies.

Bankstown Airport has set its sights for the horizon. Airport operator Aeria Management Group (AMG) has already invested more than $500 million in facilities and infrastructure at the country’s fourth-busiest airport.

Now, AMG, which is owned by Aware Super, one of Australia’s largest profit-for-members superannuation funds, has announced substantial investments to meet the needs of Australian aviators for generations to come.

Leading such investment is the $50 million Aviation Hangar Project Major Development Plan, which will support up to 10 separate GA operations in the heart of the airport’s aviation zone. The flexible and adaptable hangar buildings are designed to meet diverse needs, such as emergency and aeromedical services and emerging aviation technologies.

The project features new landside road access, aircraft and car parking, and unrivalled access to airport taxiways and runways. Sustainability is at the forefront of the project, including on-site solar power on the airport’s embedded electricity network, water-saving initiatives, and energy-efficient lighting.

The major development plan is one of several GA investments that will maintain Bankstown Airport as a centre of excellence for aviation for future generations.

AMG is committed to the long-term sustainability of GA and broader economic and employment generation for the benefit of people and businesses across NSW.

Bankstown Airport already contributes more than $1.7 billion a year to the State economy and supports over 8,000 jobs across more than 180 operators and the supply chain. AMG plans to build on that contribution by delivering multiple new hangars across the airport to suit diverse needs, as well as ongoing upgrades to airport taxiways, runways, and roads.

Such investments will support the airport’s essential services for regional and remote communities across NSW, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory. They will also underpin the transition of Australia’s aviation industry to decarbonisation.

Bankstown Airport is the proud home of Australian aviation company AMSL Aero, which is developing the world’s first long-range hydrogen-powered vertical take-off and landing aircraft. In 2024, Bankstown Airport became the first airport in the country to provide hydrogen as an aviation fuel.

A year on, the airport continues to take major steps towards zero-emission air travel, for vital air services such as medical transfers, firefighting, and freight.
