Diamond Aircraft says its Special Mission Division will deliver two twin-engine DA62 MPP (Multipurpose Platform) special-mission aircraft to UK aviation services provider 2Excel Aviation in 2023. Founded in 2005 by a pair of RAF pilots, 2Excel Aviation contracts special-mission services such as aerial dispersant and surveillance operations for the oil industry, training for military forward air controllers, and fixed-wing search and rescue and border and fishery patrol missions for UK governmental agencies.

2Excel is based in Northamptonshire and has more than 400 employees and 30 aircraft. Along with special-mission services, it provides bespoke aviation solutions through its capability development and charter and supporting divisions.

“We are acquiring these fantastic DA62s to bolster our fleet of special-missions aircraft to service our rapidly growing customer base,” says 2Excel Aviation Director of Special Missions, Arnie Palmer. “The aircraft will make our operations even more efficient by reducing operating and maintenance costs. They will also help us to reduce our emissions in line with our ambitious carbon reduction plan.”

    Diamond’s Special-Mission Concept

Diamond Aircraft has more than 100 special-mission aircraft in operation worldwide. The manufacturer’s special-mission team provides comprehensive turnkey solutions with a single point of contact. Customers can choose between the DA62 MPP and Diamond’s smaller DA42 platform, and can have them outfitted for law enforcement, search and rescue, coastline and border patrol, disaster management and firefighting, airport landing systems calibration, and more.

Available equipment options include airborne sensors, airborne laser scanners, broadcasting cameras, land and sea radars, a moving map and task management system, datalinks, ground stations, global support, spare parts, and tooling. Diamond can also provide transport and corresponding pilot, operator, and maintenance training.

    The DA62 MPP

The DA62 MPP features composite construction, a Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit with GFC700 autopilot, and twin 180-horsepower (134-kilowatt) Austro Engine AE 330 turbocharged 2-litre jet fuel engines with an electronic engine control unit (EECU) single-lever control system. The aircraft is designed for one- or two-pilot operation and has a maximum range of 1,356 kilometres (732 nautical miles) at 50% power at 4,267 metres (14,000 feet). Diamond says it has a maximum service ceiling of 6,096 m (20,000 ft), a 710-kilogram (1,566-pound) useful load, and a maximum airborne operation time of 11.7 hours.
