Virgin Australia Debuts Interior Design Prototype In Two Boeing 737-800s
Virgin Australia is trialling a new interior cabin design over the coming months in two of its nine new Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The design lets Business Class travelers recline an extra 17.8 centimetres (7 inches), a 40% improvement over the current seats. Seats in Business Class also have more comfortable, customisable leg and footrests now. The airline says customer feedback will determine whether it implements the new interior in future additions to its fleet as it continues the current expansion program.
Virgin Australia unveiled the trial design on a video posted to its TikTok account. The airline says it recently became the country’s first airline to launch a TikTok account, a move it hopes will help it reach new audiences; Virgin says the account has already garnered nearly 2 million organic views.
Creating Great Experiences
Other new Business Class features include self-deployable nonslip cocktail tables, moveable tray tables with inbuilt device holders that maximise space and usability during meal service, and more in-seat cubbies for personal items. Passengers in Economy X seats will also benefit from up to 40% extra legroom and a seatback device holder, which is a first for Virgin Australia.
“We can’t wait for guests to experience the new interior for themselves if they’re lucky enough to fly on either of the two aircraft that have initially been fitted with the new design,” says Paul Jones, Virgin Australia group chief customer and digital officer. “We’re really focussed on creating great experiences for our guests, and the design has been carefully considered to implement thoughtful features that we know will make travelling with Virgin Australia all that more enjoyable.”
An Enhanced Relaunch
Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 aircraft are configured with eight Business Class and 162 Economy seats, each equipped with a new, more comfortable horizontal rib design. The prototype interior also features a return of purple LED lighting and the trademark leaf pattern design seen in many Virgin Australia airport lounges that is embossed onto the Economy seat headrests.
Virgin Australia has made numerous enhancements since relaunching in 2020. Examples include adding 12 new return domestic services since September 2021, adding new and refreshed Business Class and lounge menus, committing to re-open premium lounges (formerly The Club lounges) by early 2022, and resuming international airline partnerships that connect customers and Velocity members to hundreds of destinations worldwide.
