Read More (About Dassault Aviation)Founded by Marcel Dassault in Paris, France, Dassault Aviation claims to be the last aviation group globally that remains owned by its founding family. The company also says it is the only group worldwide that designs, manufacturers, sells, and services both combat aircraft and business jets. Dassault Falcon Jet is the U.S. subsidiary of Dassault Aviation, which is a subsidiary of Dassault Group.
Dassault’s history dates to World War I with the founding of Société d'Études Aéronautiques by Marcel Bloch, Henry Potez, and Louis Coroller in 1916 to produce the SEA series of fighter planes for the French military. The company disbanded after the war ended in 1918 due to lack of demand. Bloch went on to start Société des Avions Marcel Bloch, which was nationalized in 1936 to become Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Sud Ouest (SNCASO). During the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, France’s aviation industry was largely disbanded. Bloch was arrested for refusing to collaborate with the occupiers and was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp until the end of the war. Once free, Bloch changed his name to Marcel Dassault and renamed the company, Avions Marcel Dassault. The name Dassault was the nom de guerre of his brother, Darius Paul Bloch, who served in the French Resistance and is derived from char d’assaut, meaning “tank.”
The company continued to focus exclusively on military aircraft until the mid-1960s when Dassault entered the civilian aircraft sector with the Falcon 20. In 2017, Dassault Aviation delivered its 2,500th business jet, a Falcon 900LX.
Falcons are multi-mission aircraft, capable of carrying out military and public service missions, surveillance, maritime response or patrol, medical evacuations, and cargo transport, as well as business travel. The Falcon family currently includes seven jets with maximum flight ranges from 6,204 kilometres (3,350 nautical miles) to 13,890 km (7,500 nm), including the Falcon 8X, which made its maiden flight in 2015 and that offers a 13-metre (42.8-foot)-long cabin and a 11,945-km (6,450 nm) flight range. Dassault says the 8X is offers the most extensive selection of cabin configurations of any large-cabin business jet.
Dassault says its Falcon business jets use 30% to 50% less fuel than its competitors’ aircraft and produce the lowest CO2 emissions in the market. Dassault claims that more than 2,100 Falcons are in service in nearly 100 countries. The company operates a global network of 60-plus service centres and five major maintenance centres, and maintains two Falcon Response support aircraft to offer mobile service.
