About Turbine Amphibious Aircraft & Floatplanes

Although most aircraft can float on water by design in the event of an emergency water landing, turbine amphibious planes and floatplanes (also called “seaplanes”) are specifically designed to land on, float on, and take off from large bodies of water. Many pilots, in fact, consider operating seaplanes to be among the most fun and rewarding ways to fly. This is due at least in part to the remote locations they make accessible through their ability to land on and take off from lakes, inlets, rivers, seas, and oceans, where an airfield may be nonexistent or otherwise too difficult to reach.

Some seaplanes known as “flying boats” feature a ship-like hull that’s designed to function only on water. Floatplanes also float on water, typically through the use of two integrated floats, or pontoons, situated underneath the fuselage or by modifying the aircraft to accept third-party floats. Additionally, some floats build in retractable wheels that allow them to function both on water and land. Airplanes in the latter group are amphibious planes.

    Multiple Missions Supported

Along with transportation for personal adventure trips, amphibious planes and floatplanes are used in the tourism industry as well as cargo and mail delivery, humanitarian aid, rescue and firefighting, military, and other applications. Historically, seaplanes were especially popular around World War II when landing strips were less common and land-based aircraft were less advanced. They’re seeing a resurgence these days, though, due to an increase in chartered VIP, business, and tourism trips.

Textron Aviation’s Cessna Caravan series is a consistently popular seaplane. Featuring Pratt & Whitney turbine engines, modern Cessna Caravans provide a Garmin G1000 NXi flight deck, stylish luxury and executive interior options, air conditioning, extended cargo abilities, and other features that make them a popular option. Daher’s Kodiak 100 aircraft represent another popular option, thanks especially to their synthetic vision, weather radar, integrated autopilot, and other advanced safety systems.
